"He did not choose the Freedom that existed mere inches from him, so close he could drink it in with every breath. Instead, Gabriel Ryan turned towards the onrush of people that crowded around him-a gathering of lost and dying souls trapped in a place that had seen revelry for scant hours, then had borne witness to absolute horror." The Knights Of Columbus Fire of 1942 in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, took the lives of ninety-nine poor souls, with a further one hundred and nine severely wounded by the flames. The dead and wounded were comprised of the following branches of the Armed Forces of several countries The Royal Canadian Air Force; The Canadian Army; The United States Army; The Royal Navy; The Royal Canadian Naval Reserve; The Merchant Navy; The Newfoundland Militia, on home ground and hardest hit. This catastrophic event, which justice inquiries doubtlessly pinpointed to the work of German espionage, still reverberates throughout wartime history. This is the true story of a 21-year-old Newfoundland Militia Private who found himself inside this raging inferno one wintry December night, based upon his private journals.

His Soldier Coat Shannon Marshall Lush 9780968280584 Books Reviews
First of all, in the interest of full and honest disclosure, I am the uncle of the author and son of this story's protagonist. In fact, I proudly share his name. Therefore, how could I not love this book. However, I do consider myself an objective judge of literary merit and I would not post a comment at all in this case if I could not do so in a positive light. For those who honour the sacrifices of those who have gone before, this book is a beautifully composed depiction of the horror that visited an otherwise celebratory break from the spectre of World War II in post-depression St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. The author captures the spirit of Gabriel Ryan through reference to his thoughts and words as well as through imagery and imagination. He not only gives a sense of attachment to the place from which my Father came, but also a voice to a man who preferred an understated and quiet existence. I want to thank Shannon for recounting stories of my Dad, some of which I had no prior knowledge. I did, however, know of his heroism and the matter-of-fact way he dismissed his actions as being those of one who did what he had to do under most extreme circumstances. Dad espoused the traits of a generation that suffered greatly, but shouldered their burdens with a grace foreign to many of us today. I honour them all and I honour Shannon, my nephew, for writing such a beautiful and important snapshot of my Dad's life. Thank-you.
A recommended read for local history buffs. Unique perspective on a tragic historic event. Definitely a writer to watch for the future.
